Turu Street is one of the busiest streets in Tartu. The city wants to reduce the speed limit to 40 kilometers per hour.
The main issue on Turu Street is that cars drive too fast. This creates noise, and many people live there. The city aims to lower the speed with the new project.
Another problem is that cycling on Turu Street is difficult. Often, there are no separate bike lanes. City architect Jiri Tintera said this is a significant concern.
In recent years, speed limits have been reduced on streets in central Tartu. On quiet streets, the speed is 30 km/h, on main streets in the city center 40 km/h, and outside the city 50 km/h.
Separate bike lanes are planned for Turu Street. A two-way bike path will be built towards the Emajõgi River. Towards Karlova, there will be a bike lane in the same direction as the cars, separated from both pedestrians and vehicles.
The bike path on Turu Street will connect the bike paths of Sõpruse Bridge and the Riia-Turu intersection. The Riia-Turu intersection will be rebuilt between 2028 and 2029.
The street reconstruction will cost approximately 2.2 million euros. About one million euros will come from external funding.
Construction on Turu Street will begin next year.
