Veiko Kommusaar said that work on the eastern border will be completed by the end of 2027. Work is being carried out in two larger border sections. The total length of the works is approximately 47 kilometers.
The work for 2025 is already completed. Delay fences and permanent infrastructure were installed on the land border. Infrastructure was installed at the ends of access roads in the Saatse Boot.
Rivers and lakes are guarded using other methods. Border points were strengthened. The Narva control center is ready, and the Luhamaa center will be completed this year.
The work includes the construction of access roads, patrol roads, surveillance masts, installation of delay fences, and video cameras. Previously, work was carried out over 63 kilometers.
PPA will continue work in 2026 and 2027. The goal is to complete all necessary work. Delay fences will also be installed in places where they were not initially planned.
Five new surveillance positions were built on the Narva river border. Currently, nine new positions with infrastructure are being built. In addition, there is a plan to secure funding for a 15-kilometer land section.
Kommusaar said that Estonia needs modern border infrastructure. It is important that surveillance systems work well. Delay fences should catch people with malicious intentions. Control centers must have an overview of everything happening on the entire border.
Border guards must be able to arrive quickly. For this purpose, well-maintained access roads and patrol roads are needed. PPA plans to complete all work by the end of 2027.
