The Ministry of the Interior wants to change the operating hours of border checkpoints.
Currently, border checkpoints are open from 7 AM to 7 PM. This rule is valid until the end of August.
The minister says the rule helps with security. Some people want a closed border. But this cannot be done.
Now the ministry wants the border checkpoints to be closed at night. This would be in effect until the rule changes.
Fewer people are crossing the border. In 2025, 512,000 people crossed. In 2026, 444,000 people crossed.
Fewer cars are also crossing the border. In 2025, 43,500 cars crossed. In 2026, 35,000 cars crossed.
In May and June, the same number of people crossed the border as before. But compared to 2025, there are 19% fewer people. There are 14% fewer cars.
