The city of Tallinn has launched a new project to renovate the first microdistrict of Mustamäe. The oldest apartment buildings will receive a new look and more energy-efficient features. However, parking spaces will be reduced.
The project, called SOFTacademy, is the first of its kind in Tallinn. It focuses on community engagement and urban renewal. The renovation of four apartment buildings will use factory-produced modular elements. Additionally, elevators will be added to two buildings.
The renovation work will be carried out by the company Everster OÜ. The buildings included in the project were randomly selected. They are the oldest buildings in Mustamäe. The work is expected to begin this year and be completed by 2027.
The residents of the buildings supported the project, but making financial decisions was challenging. It was necessary to obtain the consent of 51% of the building owners. Active residents helped gather the necessary votes.
Residents will cover the majority of the renovation costs themselves. The project is also supported by European and Estonian organizations. In total, the project will cost over 15 million euros.
Mustamäe has had issues with parking. The city aims to remove parking from between the buildings. To achieve this, plans include building parking structures, but they are not yet ready. As a result of the project, parking spaces will be further reduced.
The goal of the project is not just building renovation but also learning. The city wants this project to serve as an example for others. SOFTacademy is the first such project in Tallinn and is hoped to inspire others.
