The national mailbox is on the website eesti.ee. It receives government notifications such as medical prescriptions, tax notices, or fines. If a person links the mailbox to their email, they can receive notifications via email.
The Ministry of Justice wants to add a new feature to the mailbox. It will help send important documents to individuals, such as court summonses or fines. The system aims to reduce paper usage and speed up the delivery of notifications.
Currently, the mailbox is accessible on eesti.ee or the national application. In the future, it may also be available in other major portals, such as the health portal. From there, all notifications can be viewed.
If a person or company does not accept the document, they may lose access to some e-services. Businesses are against this because it may cause problems. For example, if a company cannot use the e-tax board, it cannot make payments.
Currently, access to some services can already be restricted if a document is not accepted. In the new system, institutions can decide for themselves how to restrict access. Each institution has its own rules.
Currently, 3 out of 4 letters are delivered. The new system will make it harder to ignore court summonses and notifications. If a document remains unaccepted, attention can be drawn to it, but this does not mean an automatic restriction.
Some documents still remain undelivered. In such cases, the state uses other methods, such as postal letters or notices in newspapers.
