Elva Gymnasium has problems with its admission procedure. The Ministry of Education says it is not in compliance with the law. Admission interviews are currently taking place, but the school administrator wants to cancel them. However, teachers do not support this.
A few weeks ago, the school's director Marek Sammul was dismissed from his position. He asked teachers to indicate which students would not cope in the gymnasium. He asked them to do this secretly and in whispers. Teachers want Sammul to be reinstated as director. They have turned to the Ministry of Education.
The Ministry of Education cannot decide whether the director's dismissal was justified. However, the ministry found that the admission procedure is not in compliance with the law. "The admission procedure does not clearly state what exactly is being assessed," said ministry representative Mairi Uusen.
Currently, admission interviews are being conducted at Elva Gymnasium with 200 students. These are taking place under conditions that are not in compliance with the law. The school's deputy director Marek Pihlak said the process will be brought into compliance with the law at the earliest opportunity. "Everything must be in order by June 9," he said.
Teachers do not support canceling the interview results. "The interviews are being conducted fairly," said teacher Johannes Must. The school and the municipality will meet on Friday to discuss the situation.
The Ministry of Education plans to check the admission procedures of other schools. This will help avoid problems in the future.
