81 years ago, up to two and a half thousand Estonian soldiers in German uniforms fell in the battles of Sinimäed. Previous organizers considered Grenaderimägi more as a cemetery, where political speeches have no place.
This year, the event was organized by the Friends of the Estonian Legion Club. They believe that politicians play a significant role in explaining Estonian history. Martin Sööt from the club's board said that Sinimäed is a battlefield, but it is also a place to remember the sacrifices. He added that Sinimäed was never conquered, and this is rarely talked about in schools.
Member of Parliament Meelis Kiili (RE) participated in the Sinimäed memorial event for the first time. He believes that this is an important part of Estonian history and should be remembered. Kiili noted that previously there were no security or political reasons to come to Sinimäed.
On Grenaderimägi, politicians were able to speak and lay flowers. Members of the government were not seen there. Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Arvo Aller (EKRE) said that this shows that the government may not be on the same page with the parliament. He emphasized that the government should understand its role in Estonian history and the fight for freedom.
The defensive battles of 1944 halted the Soviet offensive for a few weeks. Thanks to this, thousands of Estonians managed to escape to the West from Soviet occupation.
