The University of Tartu Senate decided to recognize several individuals. They received the University of Tartu Great Medal and the Star of Appreciation. The Great Medal is the university's highest honor. It is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions.
The Senate made the decision on October 31. The Great Medal recipients were: emeritus professor Jaak Aaviksoo, professor Marlon Gerardo Dumas Menjivar, professor Kalle Kirsimäe, and professor Ivo Leito. Jaak Aaviksoo was the University of Tartu rector from 1998 to 2006. He has influenced the University of Tartu and Estonian education.
Professor Marlon Gerardo Dumas Menjivar is a renowned computer scientist. He has done extensive work at the University of Tartu, and his works have been widely cited. Professor Kalle Kirsimäe is a renowned geology scholar. He has led geology education and research at the University of Tartu.
Professor Ivo Leito is a renowned chemistry scholar. He combines science, precision, and innovative teaching in his work. The University of Tartu also recognized other individuals with medals and awards. A total of 123 people were recognized.
The University of Tartu's Star of Appreciation was awarded to, for example, statesman Siim Kallas, conductor Triin Koch, and science journalist Jaan-Juhan Oidermaa. Their names have been published on the university's website.
