The National Audit Office found many problems in the Ministry of Defense's area of governance. These problems are systemic and require urgent solutions. Janar Holm said that Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkur and the Chancellor understand the seriousness of the situation.
Holm emphasized that this is a systemic problem. For example, they paid 370,000 euros to a supplier twice. Even earlier, 10 million were paid as an advance without a contract. Holm said that such mistakes should not happen.
The Auditor General clarified that the problem is that payments are made accidentally. If it were intentional behavior, it could be discussed. However, the problem is systemic and requires attention.
Holm said that the Ministry of Defense has understood the problem and has now begun to take significant steps. The Minister of Defense and the Chancellor are taking it seriously. Now it is necessary to decide whether additional staff is needed.
Holm confirmed that the money for the Himars contract went to the right place and the goods will be delivered. He emphasized that it is important to recover money that has been overpaid.
Holm believes that the defense sector must demonstrate that every euro is spent to benefit defense capability. Society is making great efforts to raise funds, and the defense sector must show that they are worthy of trust.
