Frank Kutter OÜ announced that they must cease production. The reason is the spread of African swine fever. The Agriculture and Food Board ordered the halt of production and the destruction of raw materials and products.
The company tried to find solutions, but the state will not compensate the costs. Therefore, Frank Kutter OÜ cannot continue production. Johanna Maripuu, a board member, said that this is a difficult decision but unavoidable.
The cessation of the company's operations will result in the layoff of employees. A total of 34 production workers and 9 office workers will be laid off. This will be done in accordance with the Employment Contracts Act.
Consultations with employees will be held in the coming weeks. The Unemployment Insurance Fund will provide assistance and counseling to help employees find new jobs.
On July 26, African swine fever was detected in Rapla County, Kehtna Parish. Nearly 4,000 pigs at Frank Kutter OÜ's farm were infected with the disease.
African swine fever is not dangerous to humans or other animals. However, the virus can spread through infected materials. The virus is spread by sick animals and contaminated equipment if not properly cleaned.
