The Riigikogu will discuss the agreement on Tuesday. The agreement will bring Swedish prisoners to Tartu. The session begins at 10 AM. It can be watched on the ERR website.
There are fewer prisoners in Estonia. Therefore, it was decided to rent a prison in Tartu. The plan is to bring 600 foreign prisoners to Estonia. Estonia will take care of the prison infrastructure, staff, transport, medicine, and IT. The government says it demanded an analysis before the agreement.
Interior Minister Igor Taro said: Estonia will not take dangerous prisoners. If someone is dangerous, they will be sent back to Sweden.
The rental of Tartu prison has caused disagreements in the country. Isamaa wants to review the agreement again. The leader of Tartu said that the city must be involved and security must be clear.
The State Prosecutor's Office is concerned. It says that foreign prisoners may commit crimes. This means more costs and work. Translations are also a problem, as there are few translators for Swedish and Arabic.
The ministry says that costs have been accounted for. Additional funds will be found if necessary.
If the agreement is ratified, the first prisoners will arrive next year.
