Starting July 7, identity can be verified in the Estonian app. This can be done via a smartphone. Users can submit their ID card or passport digitally.
This is voluntary for both service providers and users. The Estonian Information System Authority (RIA) says the new solution will be implemented gradually.
RIA Deputy Director General Taavi Ploompuu says service providers can now try the new solution. They can test and implement it in their systems.
According to the new law, service providers can verify a customer's identity through the Estonian app. This is equivalent to checking a passport or ID card.
To verify identity, the user must download the Estonian app. Then, they must log in using Mobile-ID, Smart-ID, or EU eID. In the app, they can select a document and press the "Show identity verification code" button. A QR code valid for 3 minutes will appear on the phone.
The service provider must also log in to the Estonian app. They can scan the user's QR code. After that, the service provider can view the user's data for 30 seconds.
In addition to the QR code, there are other ways to verify identity. All options are described on RIA's website.
All users who have the Estonian app should update it by July 7. Then, the new feature can be used.
Documents in the Estonian app can only be used in Estonia. It does not replace a physical document abroad. The app cannot be used to apply for new documents. A physical document must still be carried.
The Estonian app was released on December 9, 2024. It has been downloaded by 52,000 people.
