Starting July 7, identity can be verified in the Estonian app. This can be done using a phone. Users can show an ID card or passport.
This is voluntary. RIA states that the new solution will be implemented gradually.
Service providers can try the new solution. They can test and use it.
According to the new law, service providers can verify a client's identity via the Estonian app. It is similar to checking a passport or ID card.
To verify identity, the user must download the Estonian app. Then, they need to log in. In the app, they can select a document and press a button. A QR code will appear on the phone, valid for 3 minutes.
The service provider must also log into the Estonian app. They can scan the user's QR code. After that, the service provider will see the user's data for 30 seconds.
In addition to the QR code, there are other ways to verify identity. All options are described on the RIA website.
All users of the Estonian app should update it by July 7. Then, the new feature can be used.
Documents in the Estonian app can only be used in Estonia. It does not replace a physical document abroad. The app cannot be used to apply for new documents. A physical document must still be carried.
The Estonian app was released on December 9, 2024. It has been downloaded by 52,000 people.
