There are still over 20 Soviet-era monuments in Estonia. In Sillamäe, there is one Soviet obelisk. The city cannot remove it because there is no law.
The Center Party says that the city should decide. If the state does not see a problem, then the city will act on its own.
The President did not declare a law. The government parties are not in agreement. The Economic Committee discussed the issue. No one recommends discussing it again.
The Minister of Justice says that the Ministry of Culture held back the process. The issue is important. Many supported the removal of Soviet symbols.
In Sillamäe, the Soviet obelisk has been made neutral. There is a small star on the plaque. The obelisk was erected in 1975.
