Tallinn City Council elected a new chairman. The new chairman is Mihhail Kõlvart. He received 44 votes.
The vote was attended by 75 council members. Four members were absent. One ballot was invalid.
Kõlvart was also the chairman of the city council in 2017–2019. Later, he was the mayor of Tallinn. He served as mayor until March 2024.
The new coalition consists of the Centre Party and Isamaa. They made an agreement. The Centre Party has 37 seats in the council. Isamaa has 11 seats.
The opposition includes the Social Democrats, the Reform Party, and the Conservative People's Party. The Social Democrats have 17 seats, the Reform Party has 8, and the Conservative People's Party has 6.
The council also elected deputy chairmen. The first deputy chairman is Sven Sester. He received 72 votes. The second deputy chairman has not yet been elected.
Sester said that everyone should cooperate. This is in the interests of the city's residents.
The second deputy chairman position usually belongs to the opposition. However, its election was postponed. The reason was that the coalition did not yet know who the opposition candidate was.
The Reform Party suggested forming a commission. It should investigate whether city funds have been misused. The commission should work for six months.
The current mayor, Jevgeni Ossinovski, resigned. The new mayor will be elected on December 8. Isamaa has proposed Peeter Raudsepp as a mayoral candidate. The names of deputy mayors are not yet known.
