There was a service at Oleviste Church on Thursday. This church has about 2000 members. But fewer people attend actively.
Senior pastor Veljo Kaptein said: "On Christmas Eve, the church was full of people. But on Christmas Day, churches in Estonia are often empty. In Sweden, it's different - churches are full in the morning."
Oleviste congregation member Timo Tingas said: "For me, Christmas is when I can go to church on Christmas Eve and then spend time with my family."
People attend church less because many are sick or meet with family online. Oleviste congregation member Liivi Laos said: "Some prepare Christmas dinner, others talk on Facetime or WhatsApp. But our family tradition also includes going to church."
The Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church also celebrates Christmas. Metropolitan Stefanus wished for a peaceful and good new year. He said: "May God grant us all peace in a world where there is war."
Tallinn's Kaarli congregation has about 14,000 members. About 2000 are active. It is the largest Lutheran congregation in Estonia. Pastor Jaak Aus said that there were more people in church on Christmas Eve than last year.
Aus answered the question of whether Christmas Eve or Christmas Day is more important: "The first holiday should be more important. But Estonians are used to celebrating Christmas Eve. The services are different."
Aus also said that there is a lot to do during Christmas. But he still has time to meet people. He said: "This makes Christmas special - I get to meet people I haven't seen during the year."
