Last week, temporary sports courts were created on Freedom Square. They are open to all game enthusiasts until August 22nd.
800 tons of sand were brought in for two beach volleyball courts. The sand will later be recycled. Coach Laos Lukas said: "The sand is currently soft. If it rains, it may harden. But in dry conditions, it is very good."
This weekend, the Estonian beach volleyball championships will take place on Freedom Square. On Monday, young top players practiced there. Volleyball player Keira Liina Lukas said: "It’s very good to train here. The sand and the court are very comfortable."
In another part of the square, there is a 3x3 basketball court. Uljana said: "I’m very happy that such a place exists." Igor added: "I really like it! It’s the first time I’m playing here, but I really enjoy it."
Those who don’t fit on the sports court can do outdoor training on the exercise machines near St. John's Church.
The sports courts are open 24/7. On-site, sports equipment can also be borrowed. Project manager Robert Peets said: "We have two ball boxes with free sports equipment. The principle is 'take, play, and return.' Some balls have already disappeared, but I hope they are being used elsewhere. We monitor and refill the ball boxes as needed."
