The Pärnu court found three brothers guilty of human trafficking. The brothers are named Kaido, Kert, and Kevin Kaares. The court sentenced them to five years in prison, but they do not have to go to jail if they do not commit a new crime within five years.
If the brothers violate the law, they must go to prison. They must also follow the rules set by the court. The five-year probation period begins with the announcement of the court's decision.
The court decided that the company Kuivainetekeskus OÜ must pay the state €100,000. The money will be paid in installments. If the money is not paid on time, the state may seize the company's property.
The brothers must also compensate two people. They will pay €42,000 to one person and €35,000 to another. The money will be transferred to the victims' accounts once the court makes a final decision.
The court also decided that each brother must pay €4,237.95 to the state as court costs.
The brothers used two people as free labor. These people did woodwork and other tasks but did not receive payment. They were unable to change their working conditions or leave.
The victims were weak and dependent. The brothers took their documents and money. In one case, Kevin Kaares took money from a victim's bank card without permission.
The court's decision is not yet final. It can be appealed within 15 days.
The trial of the brothers' father, Peeter Kaares, is proceeding separately. He could not attend the court due to health issues. Court doctors are assessing his health.
