Elron has been working for a long time to launch the Tartu-Riga express train. Initially, this train line was supposed to start last year, but now it appears that it will begin on December 15.
The train will have five stops in Latvia, including Riga. In Estonia, it will follow the usual route to Valga. Currently, work is also being done to ensure that the train does not stop for long in Valga but moves on immediately.
To start the journeys, we need to wait for green lights from Europe. Approval has currently been granted for one two-carriage train, but three trains are needed. The process for other trains is still ongoing.
The train journey from Tartu to Riga will take approximately three and a half hours. The final schedule will be determined after infrastructure renovations.
The train from Tallinn will depart around three o'clock, arrive in Tartu around half past five, and in Riga around 9:15 PM. The return trip will be from Riga at 7:30 in the morning.
The ticket price is still a mystery. The city of Tartu is cooperating for a fast train connection both towards Tallinn and Riga. The city will help market the new train.
Alongside the Tartu-Riga express train, a combined connection between Tallinn and Vilnius will also remain in operation.
