Põltsamaa municipality wants a state gymnasium. The gymnasium has 150 students. There are two groups in each class.
Mayor Taavi Aas says: 'Gymnasium education is important. Cooperation with the state is necessary.'
A few years ago, the state did not want a state gymnasium here. Now the situation has changed. Representatives of the municipality and the state have met. They discussed making the gymnasium a state institution.
Aas says: 'The gymnasiums in Jõgeva and Tartu are full. There is not much vocational education here. There is no problem with places.'
Deputy Chancellor of the Ministry of Education Henry Kattago supports the idea. He wants Põltsamaa gymnasium to offer the same quality education.
There are two options. First: separate the basic school and gymnasium. The state and the municipality make an agreement. Second: transfer the gymnasium to the state.
Kattago says: 'Currently, there are no other such discussions. The Põltsamaa initiative is a good idea.'
The municipal council and the gymnasium agree with the idea. The state gymnasium could start in the 2027/2028 academic year.
