The development of Tartu's open-air market and market hall has been awaited for years. Indrek Katušin, a member of the market council, says that significant investments are needed. Today, everyone can see that many sales stalls are outdated. It is not modern, but there are reasons for this.
The market has large debts that are difficult to pay off. The market hall is also in poor condition. During heavy rain, the roof leaks, and water runs under the foundation. Several merchants have moved out of the market hall, gone bankrupt, or left debts.
Market manager Ivo Tombak says that the market hall is not necessary in its current location. The market's occupancy is lower than before. Tombak believes that the market hall is outdated.
Both the market manager and the council say that a new concept is needed for the market. This would help merchants and buyers. Katušin mentions that the market is located in a beautiful place, but today it is closed off and isolated.
The city of Tartu initiated a new planning competition in the spring. This seeks a solution for the Sadama quarter. However, the market will not be changed in the near future. City council member Elo Kiivet says that construction could start in 3–5 years.
