In the Riigikogu, Isamaa and Keskerakond are in opposition. They have no candidate of their own to support in the presidential elections. Both parties may support Ülle Madis. Allar Jõks says finding a presidential candidate is difficult because there is no political leadership.
The coalition parties Reformierakond and Eesti 200 want Madis for president. Madis has not yet announced her decision. Isamaa chairman Urmas Reinsalu says they are not ruling anyone out. "Madis is a possible candidate. She has to make a decision," Reinsalu said.
Keskerakond deputy chairman Lauri Laats says Madis could be a good candidate. "Madis should decide if she wants to run. All parties are waiting for her decision," Laats said. Keskerakond will make a decision next week or the week after.
The opposition party EKRE supports Mart Helme. The Social Democrats were the first to nominate Madis. "Isamaa and Keskerakond should also state their position. Not all candidates can be supported," said SDE deputy chairman Tanel Kiik.
Allar Jõks says one or two parties should lead the process. "Otherwise, the presidential election will become a farce," Jõks said. Jõks himself was a presidential candidate in 2016.
Madis finds it difficult to respond because her position does not allow her to engage in politics. Jõks says the Riigikogu Board of Elders should clarify whether Madis has sufficient support. "If there is support, then Madis should be asked if she wants to run," Jõks said. The Riigikogu speaker said the Board of Elders will convene in early August.
