Eesti Raudtee cannot use replacement buses from September 1. However, trains will not go faster yet. This will take another three weeks. The documents for the new safety system will arrive only on September 19.
The new traffic control system in Tapa is not yet operational. This means that trains will run slowly for another three weeks. A train takes about three to four hours to travel from Tallinn to Tartu.
Kaido Zimmermann, chairman of the board of Eesti Raudtee, says they can start using the new system only from September 19. Before that, the documents are not ready. Now, trains must operate according to the old schedule.
Zimmermann says this is a safe solution for the Tartu direction. The new schedule will come into effect on September 22.
The new safety system is necessary because the old systems are outdated. The new system will improve railway operations. This project is being implemented in three phases. The first phase covers the Tartu, Valga, Tapa, and Narva lines.
