The government confirmed a plan on Thursday to allocate over one billion euros to roads over the next four years.
This year, roads will receive 281 million euros, which is 30% more than before. Of this amount, 114 million will come from the state budget.
The annual vehicle tax will contribute 85 million euros per year to roads. The European Union will also provide funding, especially for the construction of four-lane roads.
The government promises to build four-lane roads from Tallinn to Tartu and Pärnu by 2035. This will cost 376 million euros.
Work has already begun on the Tallinn-Pärnu highway and the Tartu highway. Additionally, 180 km of roads will be repaired, and 460 km of gravel roads will be made dust-free.
The director-general of the Transport Administration says he expects road conditions to improve in the coming years.
According to the Infrastructure Builders' Union, 370 million euros should be invested in roads this year. The government has found more funding, but it is not sufficient for all needs.
