The University of Tartu wants fewer English-speaking students. Previously, there were 24 students. Now there are seven fewer. The university wants to add 20 Estonian-speaking students. This will help with the shortage of doctors.
The dean of the university says: "We want more students in medical science. We know that by 2033, we will need 1,250 new doctors. We have 186 study places. Each year, we need to train 14 more doctors."
The university has added study places over the last two years. In 2023, there were 180 students. This year, there are 187 students. A university member says: "In ten years, there will be 10% fewer doctors. 200 first-year students would be good."
If there are fewer international students, there will be less money. Adding 20 study places will cost between 500,000 and 700,000 euros. The Ministry of Education says that finding the money is important.
