The company Kihnu Veeteed, which operates ferry services to Vormsi, announced on its website that the ferry Ormsö has broken down. As a result, all departures on Saturday and Sunday have been canceled. On Monday, there will also be no departure from Sviby at 13:20.
The company promised to announce the schedule departure from Rohuküla at 14:30 on Monday at 13:00. The company said: „Due to a technical failure, there may be disruptions in departures. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please follow updates on the website.”
The mayor of Vormsi, Erkki Savisaar, criticized the government on social media. According to him, the government has failed to ensure reliable ferry connections. He also said that the government has not built ice roads during cold weather.
Savisaar wrote: „The ferry was hit by a technical failure. The state did not build a ship that would be easy to maintain and repair. This created a situation where a monopolistic company does the work, which comes to do the job when it has time.” He added: „The state does not deal with the issue of ice roads. This means that it is not safe to go to Vormsi.”
The Transport Board announced at the end of January that it would not open any ice roads this year. Later, they reversed their decision and promised to build an ice road between Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. Currently, an unofficial ice road is used between Vormsi and the mainland.
