Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna gave a major speech in the Riigikogu. The speech contained much about foreign policy. Security expert Meelis Oidsalu finds that Tsahkna's personality gives the speech a peculiar effect.
Oidsalu says that Tsahkna's speech belongs in a different register. According to him, the speech is somewhat funny. Although the content is correct, it seems slightly comical.
Estonia's foreign policy has been successful in recent years. The Ministry of Defense and the Defense Forces have contributed to this. In Oidsalu's opinion, politicians are using this successful field for domestic political purposes.
Oidsalu mentioned that Reform Party members Eerik-Niiles Kross and Marko Mihkelson have been active. They have made sharp statements on topics related to America and Israel.
In Oidsalu's view, the foreign minister should not take his work too seriously. He doesn't need to shout to show how successful Estonia is.
Oidsalu praised the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He said that the Iceland Square team is doing good work. Estonia is also active on the topic of reserve ships.
Oidsalu also mentioned Ambassador Jaap Ora. He said the situation could have been resolved more humanely. According to Oidsalu, confusion arises when Estonia does not behave correctly during crises.
Oidsalu advised Tsahkna to use simpler language in the future. He said that foreign policy cannot be considered merely an academic expression of thought.
Oidsalu also spoke about Tsahkna's television interview. He said politicians should be cautious about the topic of nuclear weapons. In reality, bringing nuclear weapons to Estonia is not a solution.
