The government has decided how to distribute EU funding to Estonia during the next period. According to the decision, more funding will be used for Estonia's security.
The government approved the preliminary plan for the EU's 2028–2034 budget period. This plan outlines how Estonia will use EU funds. The plan consists of five main parts: economy and competitiveness, security, rural life, education, and good governance.
According to the first plan, over half of the funding will go towards developing the economy and security. 38% of the funding will go to rural life, agriculture, and the food sector. 10% is reserved for education and social cohesion, and approximately 1% for good governance.
For the EU's next budget period, Estonia will receive approximately 6.5 billion euros. The initial plan covers an investment of 5.5 billion euros. The final amount will be determined after negotiations with the EU.
260 million euros will be used for the development of industry and science. Additionally, there are plans to invest 45 million euros in the digitalization and automation of businesses. Cybersecurity and reducing bureaucracy will also be supported.
108 million euros will go towards supporting small and medium-sized enterprises outside larger cities. Additionally, there are plans to develop industrial areas to create jobs across Estonia.
In the field of internal security, multi-purpose drones and surveillance aircraft will be purchased. Police aviation capability will be upgraded to ensure border surveillance and emergency response. EU funds will also be used to improve external border control and migration management.
There are plans to create more shelter opportunities and improve crisis information so that timely information reaches people quickly.
