Lidl announced that it will open a new store in the Järve Center next year. Selver already operates there. This is already the several location for Lidl where they open a store next to another grocery store.
Two months ago, Lidl opened a new store in the T1 shopping center. Selver has also been there for years. Lidl says that in big cities it is difficult to find new locations for stores. Therefore, it is easier to open a store in shopping centers.
Selver does not feel disturbed when Lidl comes next to them. They say that more customers come and some shop in both stores. Tarmo Hõbe, the manager of the T1 shopping center, says that people visit both stores and buy different things.
Merchants say that having multiple grocery stores in one center is common in the Nordic countries. For example, in Helsinki, there are many centers with three or four grocery stores side by side. In Estonia, this can also be seen in the Tartu Lõunakeskus and the Rocca al Mare center in Tallinn.
