The tracked self-propelled howitzer K9 Kõu is taught to reservists at various exercises. These are people who, during their military service, learned to use the FH-70 field howitzer. The Estonian Defense Forces no longer use field howitzers. They have been provided to Ukraine. The Kõu has the same caliber, but it is more convenient and weather-resistant than field howitzers.
Everyone who has used a field howitzer knows how important the weather is. The difference between the K9 and the field howitzer is significant. The K9 is much easier to use. It can be used indoors, while the field howitzer is used outdoors.
There is also a big difference in time. With the K9, you can fire quickly and accurately. With the field howitzer, you had to do more. Now it's easier: we drive to the location, do the job, and drive away.
During the exercises, reservists were able to fire from a 47-ton self-propelled howitzer. They did this both stationary and on the move. They could choose the firing location while moving.
Reservists were able to use six South Korean-made Kõu self-propelled howitzers at Siil. They are powerful and reliable.
