Spring has come early this year. Aire Orula, a teacher at the Tartu Nature House, says that now is the last time to set up nest boxes for golden orioles. Many visitors to the nature house have already seen the golden oriole. Therefore, several people decided to help and build nest boxes for them.
In addition to the golden oriole, nest boxes were also made for tits. Building the nest boxes was not easy. It was a challenging task. Aire Orula says that nest boxes require care. They need to be cleaned regularly. Old nesting material and dead chicks may be in the nest boxes.
Orula says that other birds may also come to the nest boxes. For example, the redstart may use the golden oriole's nest box. The tit nest boxes are liked by more birds, such as the great tit, sparrow, and black redstart. The black redstart comes later, at the end of April or in May. But the golden orioles are already here. So now is the last chance to set up a nest box.
The first birds always get the better nest boxes. Sometimes birds may even fight over nest boxes. Orula says that it is now important to act quickly so that the golden orioles can get a good home.
