Eesti Ekspress wrote that internationally renowned opera singer Monika-Evelin Liiv sent a letter to the leadership of the Estonian National Opera Estonia. She said that Estonian soloists pursuing careers abroad are not allowed to perform in the theater. According to Liiv, the reason is that the theater's ensemble planner Helen Lepalaan teaches singing for money and decides who gets the role.
Soprano Aile Asszonyi, who is currently singing in Japan, said the situation is absurd. She said that when one person decides whether you get on stage or not, it is very sad. Asszonyi has been part of Estonia's ensemble for 11 years. She said that claims that her calendar is always full are not true. She has performed in many Estonian concert and theater organizations.
Estonian National Opera Estonia director Ott Maaten said the claims are not true. He said that Lepalaan does not teach singing and no one has to take lessons from her. Lepalaan added that she does not make decisions alone regarding the repertoire or guest soloists. She said the theater has 19 singers in its ensemble and priority is given to those who work at the theater.
Asszonyi believes the saddest part is that such a situation is happening now, when the theater has the opportunity to get a new extension. She said the Estonian music world should be united, but now there is another scandal. She feels this is very sad and hinders further development.
