The Ministry of Education and Research has initiated an inspection in schools in Ida-Viru County. They are checking whether schools comply with the language of instruction and other requirements. The inspection in Narva schools has been ongoing since March. Starting Monday, the inspection will begin in Kohtla-Järve schools.
The inspection focuses on four aspects. First, whether Estonian-language instruction is being conducted as required. Second, the qualifications of teachers are checked. Third, it is checked whether schools have the services of a speech therapist, special education teacher, social pedagogue, and psychologist. Fourth, it is examined how schools are preparing for the transition to Estonian-language instruction.
Kohtla-Järve Deputy Mayor Alevtiina Jermakova said they are expecting the inspection. They have visited all schools and know the situation there. They hope the inspection will help them identify areas that need improvement.
The head of education in Kohtla-Järve said that the transition to Estonian-language instruction and the merging of schools are causing stress. Parents and children feel the pressure. Schools are trying to motivate people and say they will manage.
Narva schools have said they will only receive a written summary of the inspection results. Teachers also want oral feedback. The head of supervision, Helen Ruus, said this issue is solvable. Schools should contact the supervision inspector.
The Ministry of Education and Research and the Language Board will conduct supervision in Kohtla-Järve schools over the next two months.
