The Center for Defense Investments (RKIK) handed over approximately 50 new armored vehicles to the 2nd Infantry Brigade. These vehicles were purchased from Turkey. Most of them are 6x6 models called ARMA, designed for infantry units. Additionally, the Defense Forces received 4x4 vehicles named NMS, which will be used by combat support units in both infantry brigades.
Marek Mardo, who heads the vehicle category at RKIK, said the design of the armored vehicles took into account the needs of the Estonian Defense Forces. He stated: "These vehicles come from Turkish production lines and are customized to our requirements. In Estonia, we only install communication equipment and other gear." The new vehicles provide better protection against small arms, mines, and shell fragments. They also have improved off-road capabilities.
The first armored vehicles arrived in Estonia at the end of 2024. Conscripts of the 2nd Infantry Brigade have already begun training. They are also using the vehicles in the large-scale exercise Siil. All ordered vehicles are expected to arrive in Estonia by the end of this year.
The Ministry of the Interior also received four new 4x4 armored vehicles. These belong to the Rescue Board's demining teams. If needed, they can also be used by the police, border guard, and security police. The contracts for the vehicles are valid for 10 years, providing an option to purchase additional vehicles and spare parts. Maintenance, repair, and development work can also be ordered.
