Tallinn's Kopli cargo station is an important logistics hub. It operates three times a week with ash transports. These transports come from Ida-Viru County and go to Pärnu County for Rail Baltica construction.
The Kopli station will remain important until the Tallinn ring railway is completed. This railway has not yet been built due to disputes. The station also connects to Paldiski port.
Enefit supplies crushed ash for Rail Baltica construction. Over two years, 800,000 tons will be transported. Operail transports the material to Pärnu. One train can carry up to 1,800 tons.
Freight trains run at night. During the day, there are many passenger trains. At night, one train goes to Paldiski and back. Ash transport is suitable for railways. It also has a low cost.
The Kopli station area is 160,000 square meters. In the future, there could be green areas and real estate there. However, the railway will continue to operate.
Tallinn wishes for the station to relocate in the longer term. Currently, it is a closed area that separates districts. The city would like to open it up as a green area or with buildings.
Construction of a railway to the Kopli peninsula is also planned. Elron will conduct a test run in the autumn. However, there is only one track there. Therefore, only one train can run at a time.
More residents will move to North Tallinn in the future. Detailed plans are already ready or in progress. City trains could be possible in the future, but this requires further discussion.
