Jonatan Vseviov left the position of Chancellor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He joined the Social Democratic Party. He said he does not know if Estonia has been asked to change its messages about the Russian threat. He believes Estonia should not do so.
Vseviov said that Estonia's voice is very important. It is our strongest weapon in international politics. The voice must be used wisely, but it cannot be abandoned. He believes that other countries know this.
Vseviov did not say whether Estonia was unofficially told to remain silent. But he said people always have different opinions. This is normal.
Vseviov noted that Estonia has clearly stated what the Russian threat is. After the start of the war in 2022, many said Estonia should have been listened to earlier. Estonia's message has been clear and precise.
Should Estonia change its tone? Vseviov replied that we must use our voice wisely. We must think about both Estonia and Europe. We must be bold and honest.
Vseviov said that not everything is always said in the media. Often we hear only a small part of the truth. He does not know if the US attitude towards Estonia has changed. This should be asked from US officials.
He said Europe must be strong. It must stand up for its security. Then there is hope that the US will help us. But we must not just wait for US help. We must act ourselves.
Russia is our neighbor. We must say clearly what we think. The best way is to support Ukraine. Everything that leads in the other direction is wrong.
Vseviov joined the Social Democrats. He wants to run for the Riigikogu. Reuters wrote that the US asked Baltic states to be calmer on the Russia issue.
