The new rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA), Hilkka Hiiop, says that students have had too little space. Therefore, she wants to build a new building.
Hiiop said that she will not make major changes at EKA. "Everything at EKA is fine. There is no need for a big change," she said. However, building a new building is important to her.
EKA's new building will be located at the corner of Põhja Avenue and Kotzebue Street. Currently, there is too little space there. "We have known for a long time that we don't fit here," said Hiiop.
Kotzebue 10 is home to the White House. Monumental art students study there. Other classes cannot be held there. "This building is small and only suitable for this class," said Hiiop.
The new building is not very large, but it will help solve the lack of space. Hiiop hopes that the new building will become part of the city and help Tallinn.
"We want it to be a wonderful art corner in the center of the city," said Hiiop. She cannot yet say how much the building will cost. But she thinks it will be in the millions.
