Kalle Laanet: I do not admit guilt in anything
Endine justiits- ja kaitseminister Kalle Laanet rääkis ERR-ile. Ta ütles, et tema endal süüd ei näe. Ta loodab, et õigusselgus saabub ruttu.
Former Minister of Justice and Defense Kalle Laanet spoke to ERR. He said that he does not see any guilt in himself. He hopes that justice will prevail soon.
The State Prosecutor filed an application. The application is for the removal of Kalle Laanet's parliamentary immunity.
Kalle Laanet told ERR: "I do not admit guilt in anything. Over the past 20 years, I have been checked. All Estonian security agencies have checked me. I have received high-level state secret clearances. Also NATO COSMIC clearance. Everyone knows my places of residence. I have disclosed all rental apartments. No one has noted anything wrong."
Laanet said that he did nothing wrong. He said: "My understanding was and is that according to the Anti-Corruption Act, the child of my spouse's previous marriage is not a related person. I did nothing wrong. I hope that justice will prevail quickly."
Laanet said that he should have investigated more. He said: "Perhaps I should have checked more thoroughly. But in 2020, there was COVID and confusion. I needed to find a place to live quickly."
Laanet said that he did not commit a crime. He said: "I did not commit a crime. I do not feel guilty. I did not cause any harm."
Laanet cannot say whether he will leave politics. He said: "I have served Estonia for 40 years. I am honest. A person can make mistakes. But that does not mean it should be canceled."
The Prosecutor's Office said that Laanet applied for housing expenses. The rental agreement based on the applications was related to a person. Suspicion is that over 13,000 euros were reimbursed.
Eesti Ekspress wrote that Laanet rents an apartment owned by his spouse's son's company. He did this as a minister. The ministries paid his rent invoices.
Laanet resigned from his position. He said: "I hope that justice will prevail. My loved ones are under attack. They do not deserve this."
