European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently said that the European Union needs to build a drone wall on the border with Russia.
A drone wall means technology for detecting and repelling drones. Defense commissioner Andrius Kubilius said that Europe currently lacks the capability to detect drones.
According to experts, the drone wall could be completed in about a year. Kubilius added that the European Union should learn from the Ukrainian military, which uses acoustic sensors to detect drones.
The first meeting regarding the drone wall will take place in Helsinki on Friday. The video meeting will involve ministers from Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Denmark, and Ukraine.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that the drone wall is needed quickly. He also said that Russian drones or aircraft should be shot down only based on the decisions of military personnel and officials.
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen emphasized that Finland has a very long border with Russia. It has a multi-layered air defense system that helps repel drones.
Recently, there have been many problems on the EU's eastern border. For example, Russian drones flew into the airspace of Poland, Estonia, and Denmark.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said that Finland does not need to worry at the moment. She said that Finland is monitoring the situation and cooperating with allies.
