The sales volume of food stores decreased by five percent compared to February of the previous year, according to Statistics Estonia. People are buying less food and looking for cheaper alternatives.
According to Statistics Estonia, food sales decreased by five percent compared to February of the previous year. At the same time, retail sales of motor fuel increased by 21 percent and industrial goods sales by six percent.
Jaanika Terasmaa, head of the sales and marketing department at Maxima, said that people are buying less food. They are looking for more promotional products and cheaper alternatives. For example, smoked sausage has been replaced by boiled sausage.
Coffee prices have risen over a long period. At least 70 percent of coffee is sold at a discount. The price of coffee has increased because demand is greater than supply and climate impacts are strong.
Sweets and eggs are also more expensive. Bird flu has affected the availability of eggs. Maxima now offers more free-range eggs, which are more expensive than conventional cage eggs.
The sale of fruits and vegetables has also declined. People are buying more cheaper loose tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes are popular because they can be offered at a better price according to the season.
The sale of alcohol and cigarettes has fallen by almost 10 percent. This is a good trend as people are drinking and smoking less.
In the summer, the VAT will rise to 24 percent. The tax increase will affect people's purchasing behavior. People will start looking for ways to save money. Food producers are offering more cheaper products that are more affordable.
