The roof of the Estonian University of Life Sciences is Tartu's largest green flat roof. Currently, more than 10 different varieties of flowering plants are growing there. Usually, the roof has dry soil, and the plants do not bloom as much. However, this year's rainy summer has helped the plants bloom beautifully.
Gloria Niin, a teacher at the university, says there are currently many flowers on the roof. Plants that tolerate dryness and heat grow there, such as thyme, mallow, and carnations. Employees admire the flowers both from the windows and while walking on the roof.
One employee mentioned that one day she smelled the fragrance when the wind blew. It was a very pleasant feeling. Gloria Niin says green roofs are becoming more popular in Northern Europe. They help make cities cooler and retain water.
The water from the green roof does not immediately go into the sewer. It remains on the roof, and the plants use it. The university's roof will remain beautiful for a few more days.
