The Environment Agency has issued six special permits. One of the permits has already been used. Farmers are struggling with wolf attacks. Wolves are preying on livestock.
It is difficult to protect livestock in Soomaa National Park. The area is flooded. The Environment Agency will issue five new permits if the attacks continue.
There are 10–12 wolves living in Soomaa. They reside in the national park. There is no hunting season as it involves hunting the wrong wolves. Ambush hunting helps to hunt only the wolves causing damage.
The Environment Agency compensates for damages. It would be better without attacks. Now, the victim must cover part of the damage themselves. No compensation will be paid for the fourth attack.
In 2024, the Environment Agency will compensate farmers. This is a large sum. The new system reduces misuse. Strong fences are needed to protect livestock. Electric fences and dogs are good to use. Wolves will come more often if livestock is not protected.
