This summer, major construction works are being carried out in 11 schools in Tallinn. Two schools – the Secondary School of Science and Hiiu School – are not on schedule. Their works are extending into autumn.
At the Secondary School of Science, there is a problem with the basement. Water is entering it. Builders are pumping out the water. Engineers are investigating whether this is a design flaw. Lower grades are studying on Roosikrantsi Street. Older grades will move to the school on Estonia Avenue on September 1.
Physical education classes are held outdoors. The sports hall is ready, but there is no furniture.
Hiiu School also has problems. The works are extending until mid-August. Then the occupancy permit process will begin. Classes start on September 1. If necessary, studies will continue at the substitute school on Vabaduse Avenue.
From autumn, Jakob Westholm Gymnasium will be renovated. It will move to the old premises of the Secondary School of Science.
There are enough study places in schools. Only central city schools are crowded.
The city is spending nearly 100 million euros on schools. Tallinn has 60 schools, one college, and 115 kindergartens. All start on September 1.
