Following the conscription reform, soldiers will also take on combat readiness duties. This means they will be prepared to respond to military threats even during their conscription period.
Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces Major General Andrus Merilo and Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur recently presented plans for reforming the Estonian Defence Forces. Karus stated that the threat from Russia has increased. The Defence Forces must be ready to respond quickly.
One of the plans is to increase the presence of the Estonian Defence Forces in Narva. A base is planned to be established there, which will be staffed by professional soldiers, conscripts, and reservists. The plan is to bring around 200–250 service members to Narva.
Karus also spoke about the new combat readiness concept. Conscripts must be prepared to respond quickly to any threat. This means they must be ready 24 hours a day.
Karus also spoke about the personnel issues in the Estonian Defence Forces. Currently, there are nearly 500 vacant positions in the Estonian Defence Forces. Additionally, 400 more people need to be recruited over the next five years. The Estonian Defence Forces require more specialists who can use new technologies and weaponry.
