Andrus Durejko, the head of Eesti Energia, said that low electricity prices are reducing renewable energy profits. "Wind turbines could produce more electricity, but the grid doesn't allow it," he added.
Durejko mentioned that the costs of balancing energy are very high this year. "If there is less wind energy than we calculated, we have to pay a penalty for it. Or we buy expensive additional electricity," he explained.
Marko Allikson from Baltic Energy Partners said that balancing energy costs are rising because the Baltic countries can no longer get electricity from Russia. "We don't have enough controllable capacity. This makes prices higher. In the future, higher prices will help the market for new batteries," said Allikson.
Eesti Energia hopes to make more profit when renewable energy is sold together. This is possible after the repurchase of Enefit Green. Durejko said: "Today we sell a lot of renewable energy, but we can also use it more wisely."
Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi stated that separating wind and solar energy creates problems. "Separating wind and solar energy was a bad decision from the start. It makes it more difficult to balance electricity production and consumption," said Ligi.
