The locomotives and carriages of Haapsalu Railway Museum attract many visitors. Unfortunately, not all visitors are well-intentioned. Over the years, the exhibits have been vandalized, damaged, and even burned. Until now, some exhibits have been freely accessible, while others have been protected by temporary fences. Now, half of the exhibits will get a permanent fence.
Museum director Talis Vare said: „Our biggest enemies are bad weather and malicious people. They throw objects through windows or vandalize walls. Such incidents occur every few months. Some have been fined.“ Mostly, the damage is done by young people.
Police chief Indrek Tohter explained: „This is a gathering spot for youngsters. They come up with interesting ideas here.“ He believes the fence will reduce damage: „Anyone who wants to cause harm will have to climb over the fence and then climb back out. During that time, someone might see or record them.“
In the future, access to the carriages and locomotives will be controlled. Vare said: „Interested visitors can enter with a ticket. The ticket fees may go towards restoring the exhibits or organizing tours.“ The museum’s fence is being built with the support of the Ministry of Culture. Additionally, the roofs of two steam locomotives will be repaired.
