Aivo Peterson, who is accused of treason, plans to run in local elections in Tallinn. His party Koos hopes for a good result in Ida-Virumaa as well, especially in Kohtla-Järve and Narva.
Peterson's court case will continue in September. Even if he is found guilty, he can participate in the elections until the court decision takes effect. All those against whom no guilty verdict has been issued can participate in the elections.
Peterson’s defender says that any of the accused can appeal the court decision. This may extend the process. Peterson can run in Tallinn, where he has many supporters, especially in Lasnamäe.
In the elections, Peterson must gather enough votes to get into the city council. If he were to go to prison, he could lose his place in the council. His seat would then be taken by another party member.
In Ida-Virumaa, the Koos party hopes for success in Kohtla-Järve and Narva. The party also supports other regions, such as Maardu, Tartu, and Pärnu. Kohtla-Järve has many problems that need to be addressed.
Koos will not nominate a mayoral candidate in Narva, as these are their first elections. The party hopes for a good result but does not want to make populist decisions. Voters in Ida-Virumaa may support Koos, especially if they are on Peterson's side.
