Estonia is building its eastern border with Russia. The border is 136 kilometers long. More than 110 kilometers are already completed.
Technical measures cover 338 kilometers of the border. This is about two-thirds of the entire border.
The Border Guard project manager Merle Tikk said that work is taking place in five different locations. In some places, the work is almost finished, while in others it is just beginning.
In the Meremäe area, a large land area was supposed to remain as a buffer zone according to the border agreement. Now it has been decided that the border will be built according to the landscape.
The Marinova border section is 2.6 kilometers long. Work will start there soon. At the Võmmorski border point, work has already progressed significantly.
Last week's rain caused a lot of damage. The rain washed ditches into the wrong places. Now much of the work has to be redone.
A new border section starts from border post 501. It goes over the Määsovitsa bog. It is not yet certain whether this section will be built. Funding is still unclear.
If funding is found, work will also begin there. The Border Guard has applied for additional funds from the state budget.
The completed border infrastructure requires maintenance. Two million euros per year are allocated for this. Maintenance includes grass cutting, snow removal, and repair work.
