The Isamaa faction initiated a bill in the Riigikogu. This bill aims to close the control line between Estonia and Russia.
The reason for the bill is the security situation and provocations by Russia. Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania are already discussing closing the border. Finland has maintained its border closure.
Isamaa chairman Urmas Reinsalu said it is necessary to cooperate with other Baltic states and Finland. This would make the border closure more effective.
The explanatory memorandum of the bill mentions that the situation at NATO's eastern border is tense. Isamaa believes that the control line should be closed to ensure Estonia's security.
The aim of the bill is to compel the government to assess and implement measures that protect Estonian citizens and the country. Closing the control line reduces risks and strengthens defense.
According to the law, the government can decide to close the control line. Isamaa made this proposal in the Riigikogu.
At the end of last year, the border closure was also a topic of public discussion. Then Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets said the government has no plans to close the border. He suggested focusing on what is happening in the Baltic Sea.
Läänemets also said that Russia is trying to cause confusion. He added that quickly closing the border is not always wise. The government closes borders when necessary, but it is not needed at the moment.
