Most parties want to support Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madis for president. However, no official proposal has been made to her. The Social Democrats said on Wednesday that Madis could be a presidential candidate. Madis herself said she is not willing to run and will continue her work as Chancellor of Justice.
Many parties believe Madis is a good candidate. Prime Minister Kristen Michal (Reform Party) said his party would gladly support Madis. Lauri Laats (Center Party) said that if Madis wants to run, she is a serious candidate. Urmas Reinsalu (Isamaa) praised Madis's work as Chancellor of Justice.
The Eesti 200 party is also willing to support Madis. However, many politicians were disappointed that Madis's name was disclosed before her consent was sought. Laats said this was unfair. Reinsalu believed the Social Democrats put Madis in an uncomfortable position.
Michal said the start of the presidential election was bad. He thought that in July, parties would discuss candidates. In August, the electoral college could convene to discuss the election. The Riigikogu will elect the new president on September 2.
